History of Some Sports
In this case study I am going to write about the major differences between some sports since they were created and how they did developed along the years; the sports I have chosen are boxing, tennis and baseball.
The first sport I am going to write about is boxing.
When boxing first started in the BC period boxers only used a soft and thin piece of leather to cover their wrists and hands connected with some straps. The straps were made out of hard leather; some used it as some kind of weapon. Boxing matches back when it started were carried out on the street where the viewers were forming the area for the fight. The fight would continue until one of the fighters was unable to fight or it ends with one of the boxer's death and back then death in boxing was common. Boxing continued as an entertainment for years until England in 1698 started to make matches in London's Royal Theater. After few years London became the center for boxers who sought money and glory. There was only one champion because there were no weight classes. The heavyweight boxer would almost always win the match. Boxing became a very popular sport despite the fact that it was brutal and outlawed. In 1743 Jack Brownton was the one who changed boxing into a real athletic competition; he wrote the Code of Rules. Some of the rules were that boxers are forbidden to punch under the belt; the fight will last until one of the boxers is unable to take his stand in front of his opponent. The biggest thing that Jack Brownton did was inventing mufflers, the first boxing gloves ever made to protect the face and hands, after that Brownton was called the Father of Boxing. The fights for the champion title became more regular so people started to lose interest. In 1867 John Graham made most of the boxing rules that we know and it was called Queensberry code of rules such as, each round last for three minute, there is one minute break between each round and if a boxer stays on the ground for 10 seconds he will lose the match.
The second sport will be baseball. In the 18th century baseball had different names such as round ball or rounders, stool ball and fletch and catch. Some of the unique rules back then were that the batter had 9 chances to hit the ball not three, if the ball hit him he would be out and there was no strike area the pitcher can throw the ball anywhere behind the batter. It was said that baseball was born from an old sport called town ball. Baseball became popular in America when amateurs started to play it with some local rules using equipment made by them in the begging of 1800s; after almost 60 years the first baseball national clubs were made. The field of baseball was made by Alexander Cartwright and the rules too; there were a lot of different rules for baseball back but the rules that were made by Alexander are the most famous and his rules were called the knickerbockers style later on it became New York style and it has not changed much since then; because of that he was called the father of baseball. Baseball was competing against cricket and the Massachusetts game which was played in New England for public interest before the civil war. After the war New York baseball style became a national game. The National Association of Professional Base Ball (NAPBB) of America was established; the biggest thing they did was splitting professionals from amateur ballplayers to what we know now as major league and minor league. One of the huge things that happened in the baseball world was an agreement called the gentlemen agreement that was made by the clubs back in the 1870s the agreement was about not making non-white players the able to play in the professional baseball that continued until 1947. The first African American player and to enter the major league was Jackie Robinson.
Last but not least is tennis. Tennis in the early days was played using hands by hitting the ball into a wall with the palm and it was called the game of the palm. The inventor of tennis was French back in the 12th century. they called it paume which means palm; tennis also became popular in England. It was played using the palm until the 16th century; rackets were invented and it was played indoors. In the 18th century Walter Clopton Wingfield made a game similar to tennis called sticky and it was played in a garden party; he changed tennis to be played outdoors to what we know now then it started to be called real tennis. Walter made a lot of tennis courts and the net was sometimes really high. Until 1875 England made rules and regulations such as the court has to be 30 feet wide and 78 feet long but the service line was 26 feet away from the baseline; the scoring was to add 15 each time; back then it was 15, 30 and 45 instead of 40. But there were some rules that still have not been decided yet like how high should the net be. Over the years rackets and the size of the ball and net height changed a lot to what we know now. The only differences is that now we have technology; for example we use cameras to see if the ball is out or not and we do not use wooden rackets.
